about us

Social Mission

Goal

To live out our Parish Goal of "Finding God in Myself, Others and all Situations for God's Greater Glory", through committing ourselves to the Justice and care/service of the poor and needy, within and outside Singapore especially when urgent need arises

Short-Term Plans

1. Social Mission Core Team [see diagram]

i. To define, come up with plans, foster and envision the Social Mission of the whole Parish.
ii. To support and guide all the ministries and neighbourhood groups of the Parish so that they can live the social mission dimension of the Parish Goal.
iii. To collaborate with PPC exco members who are primarily responsible for evaluating the running of each ministry and neighbourhood group of the Parish. PPC exco does this through quarterly reviewing, reporting, reassessing of how ministries and neighbourhood groups are operating as ministries, and how they are living or not living the Parish Goal, of which the Social Mission is an essential dimension.
2. Development of Parish Social Mission Programmes by Core Team

ii.

To define the meaning of "poor and needy" that is stated in our Social Mission goal e.g. aged, sick, dying, migrants, others who are marginalised by society: How can we parishioners live the Gospel Values through our Social Mission goals that are integrated into our Parish Goal?

Draw up a written plan on how the Parish Social Mission's core team and its supportive (additional members that are to be identified at a later date) members can on its own or jointly with the Parish's ministries and neighbourhood groups plan and organize:

a.

Parish Based Programmes in line with our Social Mission's thrusts for Social Justice by serving the poor and needy of our Church and society in Singapore and those abroad. This could include a link up with other social ministries in the Archdiocese e.g. "Willing Hearts," ACMI, JRS and the like.

b.

Inputs i.e. Conscientisation of Social Justice issues (Talks by Parish Priest and other Catholic experts to our Parish's ministries and neighbourhood groups.

c.

Plan Pastoral Exposure Programmes to help the poor and needy of society both locally and abroad e.g. visits to provide material, financial, legal aid to migrant workers, the poor, the poor aged sick/dying.

d.

To invite ministries and the rest of the 90% non-active parishioners to participate in parish-wide social mission programme developed by the SM Core Team.

e. How? To encourage these parishioners through announcements at Masses, Church Bulletin and website, fliers etc to participate in our Parish Based Social Mission projects and/or to join the Social mission projects of the various ministries and neighbourhood groups.

Long-Term Plans

Foreign Outreach Programmes
Other than local social mission projects, Parish Social Ministry can link up with Jesuit Missions in neighbouring countries e.g. Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. for periodic field trips to help the poor and needy there, especially humanitarian works during major natural disasters like earth-quakes and tsunamis.

Link up with other Christian Groups and Other Religions e.g. Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs etc to do social service project.

Funding

Money from Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) - 10% rebate from our Parish's annual total collections for Charities Week.

Monies collected from Parish based events e.g. Feast of St Ignatius Bazaar, Homemakers' Jumble sales, Canteen sales, private donations and other fund raising events

ANNEX

Definition of "poor and needy"

Anyone whose combined monthly household income is $1500 and below. Migrant workers, the homeless and others who are marginalized or oppressed by our society.

What can we do for them?

a.

Corporal works of mercy feeding them, bringing them to the doctors –e.g. when they are having a fever/flu etc. We can provide panadol, medicated oilment, tiger balm, cough syrup etc.

b. Homeless refer them to shelters we have contact with. Provide them with clothes and make funeral arrangements with known contacts for free funeral services for those who die destitute with no family or financial means.
c. Migrants Workers Seeking Employment from neighbouring countries who desire to seek employment in Singapore to secure work as nursing aids with our Catholic Homes e.g. St Theresa's Home, Mt Alvernia, St Joseph's Home and help them to apply for work permit with ICA. This will cut out the exploitative contractors/employment agents and save them $2500- $3000 agency fee and free them of the huge financial burden for themselves and their family.
d.

Material Assistance Provide groups of migrant workers with cooked meal e.g. Migrant workers – our neighbours (about 100 of them) who work at the MRT sites or Condo construction outside King's Road day and night in poor conditions. e.g. (2)Vietnamese migrants working in Johore plantations who earn only RM300 pm and who have to resort to eating iguana and forest plants.

- To recce these 2 sites soon to gather facts from the people in charge.

Social Mission Structure of the Church of St Ignatius

Each Ministry & Neighbourhood Group will have two goals:

i. Their own ministry or neighbourhood group goal
ii. The common Parish Goal.

Part of this "Parish Goal" that has to be fulfilled is the "Social Mission" dimension.
