Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

Are you searching for God?

Drawn to the Catholic Church?

Or simply curious about the faith?

You are warmly invited to begin your journey with Christ through RCIA at the Church of St. Ignatius.

RCIA is not just a course, but a journey of encountering God through prayer, Scripture, community, and reflection. Whether you are new to Christianity, exploring the Catholic faith, or coming from another Christian tradition, you will be accompanied at your own pace.

Who is this journey for?

People come to RCIA at different points in their faith journey:

Inquirers -           not baptised and exploring the Catholic faith

Candidates -     baptised Christians seeking full communion with the Catholic Church

Confirmands -  baptised Catholics preparing for Confirmation

Wherever you are starting from, you are welcome.

The RCIA Journey

RCIA unfolds in four stages:

1. Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry)

A time to ask questions, share your story, and explore the faith.

This period concludes with the Rite of Acceptance (for the unbaptised) or the Rite of Welcome (for baptised Christians). Those who enter the next stage as unbaptised are now known as catechumens.

2. Catechumenate

A period of formation through Scripture, catechesis, and participation in Church life.

At the end of this stage:

• Catechumens take part in the Rite of Election, where they are chosen by the Church and become known as the elect.

• Candidates take part in the Call to Continuing Conversion, as they prepare to be received into full communion at Easter.

3. Purification and Enlightenment

During Lent, the elect (and candidates) enter a time of deeper spiritual preparation through prayer, reflection, and the rites of the Church.

4. Mystagogy

After receiving the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil, the newly initiated — known as neophytes — continue their journey, deepening their understanding of the faith and integrating into the life and mission of the Church.

Our RCIA Journey at St. Ignatius

As a Jesuit parish, our RCIA journey is enriched by Ignatian spirituality, helping participants recognise God’s presence in daily life.

Through prayer, Scripture, testimonies, and spiritual conversations, participants are gradually introduced to the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church.

At the Easter Vigil, the unbaptised may receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, while baptised Christians may be received into full communion with the Church.

Walking with You: Sponsors

Each Inquirer and Candidate is accompanied by a Sponsor — a practising Catholic who offers support and guidance.

You may come with your own sponsor, or one will be assigned to you.
